Read how cyclists treat their bowden cables and housing. Same thing, except a cyclist's shift cable is 1.2mm thick, and the brake cable is 1.5mm thick. If you're super leery, cut open a piece of shrink wrap, tape it to the cable housing, and shrink it so it will not cause friction on the cable, but will work as a dust shield.
