TCM = Transmission control module?
Could you describe the problem and history?
How old is the transmission fluid, if we are speaking of transmission vis a vi the TCM?
Verify the transmission fluid is in an adequate amount. I believe you check the automatic transmission fluid with the car warmed up on a level surface.
If the transmission fluid is not clear and clean and if it smells burned like a hot trailer tractor brake or a burning circuit board, replace the fluid with a high quality mineral oil of the proper transmission fluid specification in the Volvo owner manual.
You may want to research the i-net at the Volvo.com and other sites and also contact the Volvo dealer and ask if any TSB (technical service bulletins) apply to your transmission and the proper transmission fluid if updated after the date of your owner manual. Volvo does sell a Volvo branded auto (and manual) transmission fluid that is (I guess) a finer and synthetic fluid specific to your transmission. Volvo fluids are $$$$.
Please research the brickboard for information on using synthetic fluids in your transmission.
If choosing to go with a synthetic transmission fluid (Redline, Amzoil, Mobil 1, etc), and the current fluid in your transmission is anything like brown and burnt smelling, some will perform an intermediate flush and fill with a high quality mineral (non-synthetic) transmission fluid of the correct specified in the owner manual (or TSB or dealer if specification was updated after your owner manual version). Drive for some thousands of miles, drain, and refill with the synthetic fluid you choose.
Verify your automatic transmission does not leak fluid.
If you choose to go with a high quality mineral oil for your transmission, merely replace it at a recurring interval.

Hope that heps.
