If you are referring to the speed sensor that is also often called the crank angle sensor or the crank position sensor, it can be tested using the self diagnostic feature of the LH 2.4. The link below shows how to perform this test on a 240. I believe the test would be the same on a 740. The diagnostic box may be located somewhere else in the engine room.
