Hi again.
The blue wire was as suspected a ground, going from the alternator case to the rear bolt on the alternator's mount. I had to take off the alternator to see this.
I've put together and installed a new harness replacing those wires, routing it so it isn't squeezed between the alternator and the block, and with chafe protection and separate bundles for the 6 AWG B+ connection and for the two 18 AWG other wires so they can't interact, and I even added a second ground wire to a nearby chassis bolt. Now I'm waiting to get a new oil pressure sender (should be here tomorrow).
I'll report back after I can fire it up and run it awhile.
