1995 900-series 8-valve NA, 247K First timing belt change since I purchased the car (in 2005). I paid Midas to do it last time. More on that in a moment...
My official Volvo OEM Crank holder tool in hand, I set about replacing my timing belt this afternoon.
That obnoxious, IPD-Tool-Destroying Crank Bolt? It was nothing against the proper OEM Tool and a 1/2-drive 24mm socket.
Everything aligned to the index marks. #1 was at TDC, cam, oil and crank pulley were all lined up.
Unfortunately... I hung up on the harmonic balancer. It wouldn't budge. Worked at it for a while, gently prying on each side until the it finally came free and revealed...
There's no index mark/key on the timing sprocket. Nothing... it appears to have been gone for a while...
Wondering if those bozos at Midas broke it off using air tools back in 2005, can't be sure, but the way that the pulley was wedged in place suggests that it hasn't moved in at least six years. I'm not sure I can be sure it won't start moving now...
Either way, I'm now *really* concerned that the timing could be slightly off, belts might fly loose on the road, and the balancer may punch a hole in the belly pan or hood on it's way out.
I've read the FAQ about the drill shank fix, but I'm a bit tired of Macgyvering things. If I've got to pull my radiator to fix this, I want to at least have the correct replacement parts on hand.
Aside from Tasca (and my local gouger...er... dealer), where can I order a replacement sprocket? Is there anything else I should replace while I'm forking around down there?
I did check the timing with a test light when everything was back together. The mark is not moving, so I think at least my harmonic balancer is good...
