thanks for the ideas-

when I pull the hose off (it has a clamp that does little) gas DEFINITELY comes out of the hose - enough to make a 12" puddle on the driveway

so, I'll try the vice grips idea once I get her warmed up

in the meantime, I guess i'm off searching for an accumulator!
