Knowing how it was done rather than money saving, has always been the motivation in my case, for doing caliper rebuilds. Can't say it is a rule with me, for I have had a few beyond my help, and the yards don't yield up decent ones like they once did.
Comment 1: It has been ages since I regularly serviced sliders (before Volvo and one measly 940 experience) but I don't recall anything about them that would give me the impression a good dust boot was optional. If crud or salt water gets past the boot, it will find its way to the cylinder and eventually score it.
Comment 2: Again, no recent experience to cite, but I would expect a local auto parts store could get you the rebuild kits, even though they might want to push the remanufactured calipers and not have them on the shelf. The online outfits should, as well, although I understand the limitations of persuasion over the telephone or chat link. Let's stand up for our rights to re-build!
