In DaveHa's case if the transmission was not acting properly and the back up lights weren't working properly (as in, coming on when in Reverse and not in neutral or Drive), it could indicate a bad PNP sensor. In which case, the TCM would tell the ECM to set the MIL on the dash. If this were the case, having the MIL lit might cause a person to fail their state inspection (depending of course which state).
In your case, if only the one bulb is out but the transmission shifts fine and the reverse lights indeed come on when the transmission is truly in reverse, you likely only need a bulb and the TCM is not setting a code.
