Toe in. Replaced steering rack

If the steering wheel is centered now, just change toe-in by doing equal nut-flat counts on either side and it will remain centered. The 4-5" number you are saying sounds way too much to me. I used to use this method and I sighted to the rear tires, and found I was buying new tires much too soon. Excessive toe-in will ruin a tire much faster than I had believed. My home alignment methods are crude and my eyesight isn't up to it, I concluded, after getting an alignment done professionally and finding those tires wear evenly.
