Check Engine light comes with no fault code 200

My son came home last night from university and I noticed his 1991 240 has the Check Engine light ON.

I followed the instructions in Bentley manual retrieving any fault code. To my surprise, the only code displayed was 1-1-1. There was no additional fault code. I then followed the instructions erasing fault code memory. Turned on the engine and the Check Engine light was still ON. Other instrument panel lights work normally.

Any suggestion?
