Gas Gauge Error part II 120-130

This is on a '67 amazon. See my earlier post.

Well I pulled out the sender unit which always had the dash gauge reading 1/4 tank. It was dirty so I cleaned it up and slapped it back in there. The gauge then read full (the tank was full). I was happy....

I drove the car for 80 miles and it still reads full. I pulled the sender again tested the dash gauge by ground it (reads empty) or having it be not connected to anything (reads full). I pulled out a brand new (from Volvo) in-tank sender unit and hooked it up. It's also only wanting to make the dash gauge read full. The new gauge reads full even if I move the float about.

Thus is it time to tear into the dash and pull out that section of this system? Do I need to install a ground wire from the body of my sender unit to the body of the car?
