M47 Thumping in reverse

1988 240 sedan with 277,500 and M47 manual trans. has developed a thumping from the transmission case only reverse. All foward gears are quiet. The rubber universal joint seems to be OK. Had the car on jack stands while a helper put into reverse , sound is from trans. case even put stethoscope for verification. Possible bearing shot??
