One fast idle success story......They seem rare.
I'm just posting this because I've seen lots of "fast idle" talk here over the years. My '87 245 has around 230,000 miles and it has been my daily driver since I bought it on ebay in 2007. I drive 76 miles per weekday. With the 5 speed and when I don't use AC, I regularly get 30+ MPG.
I developed a fast idle about 2 months ago, which was irritating, but not debilitating. The main thing was that it was eating into my mileage figures, I suspected. It went like this: start, 90 seconds of normal idle, fast idle (1500-2000 RPM) for 3-5 minutes, returned to normal. No fun shifting during the fast idle window.
As per my normal routine, I backed off thirty paces and began throwing parts at the car:
plugs, rotor, dist cap, wires, FPR, Fuel filter (#$%@#), cleaned TB, TPS adjusted, IAC removed cleaned, tried a few AMM's I've collected, check vac leaks, air filter, new AMM bellows hose (these from FPCGroton are highly inferior; the ones from IPD are a little better and twice the price.)Set base idle per achieves, Brickboard 740 FAQ.
Whew. What I got was a car that ran like a brand new automobile---with a fast idle.
Changed out the Temperature sensor -fast idle gone. Everything returned to 1987 showroom floor. Thanks to those who helped me to locate the temp sensor. I had to remove the TB to get to it and invented some new words. Also kicked the dog a few times. But, I have to say it was a rewarding little Sat morning job.
The Bentley Manual gives a good schematic of how that sensor works in conjunction with the fuel injection system.
