ac fixin' advice 200

In the process of trying to revive my 1988 240 ac I discovered that I have to jump the one wire that goes to the a/c compressor to get it to run. I know that this probably means either a bad ground wire or a bad clutch. A couple of questions on troubleshooting this:

1. Is there a specific ground wire coming off the compressor, or elsewhere, that I need to check for proper grounding?

2. Is there a way to tell if it is a bad clutch instead of the ground wire or vice versa?

3. If it is a bad clutch how big of a job is it to replace that?

Thanks very much,
Jim Lee
