Well, it's a new one on me anyway.
I was just outside changing the oil in the 242. I always like to drain the jug of new oil completely so I fix it in place and leave it for a while. Today, for something to do in the interim, I decided to pull the spark plugs one at a time to see how they looked.
#1 was normal. Kind of grayish- tan, no real wear on the electrode and the insulator looked clean. #2 was the same as #1.
When I removed #3 it also looked pretty good. It was a bit more gray than the first two.
Now this is the weird part.
As I was about to reinstall the #3 plug I noticed that instead of screwing it directly into the cylinder head there was this...I don't know what the hell to call it because I've never encountered one before...but there was this thing between the plug and the head.
The thing was screwed into the head and the plug was screwed into the thing. And it has apparently been there the entire time I have owned this car because I sure didn't put it there. I don't know how I have not noticed it before today.
I thought it was some sort of device that might be used due to thread damage in the cylinder head. I decided to remove it. It came out quite easily.
I would post a picture but I don't have a working camera battery at the moment. I will try to describe it.
The part that screws into the head is the same diameter and thread as on the plug. Also the same thread length. Above the thread it widens to about 19mm in diameter. Above that are flats for wrench.
Inside, at the end where the flats are, there are threads to accept the plug and at the other end an opening about 1/8" in diameter.
Overall it's about 1 1/2" long. Basically, it's just a tube that makes the plug stand off a bit from the head.
I went and checked another B21 head I have and there was no such object present.
I put the #3 plug directly into the head and it snugged up just like you would normally expect. I'd say there is no thread damage.
BTW, #4 plug looked good, too.
So what is this thing I found at the #3 plug?
