Hello, its been a while since I've posted a question - the bricks have been treating me well, so..
This is my 1990 760 turbo with about 220K on the chassis, 75K on engine, trans, turbo. About two months ago the battery consistently began to run down quickly. Turned out that the alternator would not charge until the engine was "goosed" to about 3500 rpm. I have been driving with a voltmeter plugged into the lighter socket. (Please don't suggest I check the belt - its the first thing I looked at - its adjusted correctly and in good shape and the pulley is not polished.) I first thought the alternator was going bad, so I replaced it with a known good alternator - and same characteristics - charges only when the engine is revved, and lasts usually until I turn the car off. All connections are good, including the ground connection. The only clue (?) which may mean nothing, is that the SRS warning light came on about the same time.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We all love electrical problems, but I don't know where to begin with this one. Thanks -
Jim Weiss
