Light steering can be caused by not enough caster, but I doubt that is the problem.

Since the power steering pump and the water pump are driven by the same belt, it is difficult to disable just the power steering without overheating the engine. Can you make a very short quick drive on a cold engine with the belt loose? The other thing you could do for testing is empty the ps system of oil, but the pump might not like too much of that.
