Mine was doing the same. I disconnected the cable from the speedo and from the tranny. Then I pulled the inner cable out of the shealth. After cleaning the cable well, I greased the cable as I reinstalled it in the shealth. I pulled it in and out several times as I greased and installed the cable, reconnected both ends and everything works fine now. Be sure to get the square ends of the cable started correctly before tighening.
