740 cooling anomaly

Tony, I think you may be on to something. The head needing to be re-torqued would also explain the other problem my daughter has been having: on cold mornings the car runs like it's got a blown gasket, hitting on two or three cylinders for a few minutes before it "warms up." Makes some sense it the head is a bit loose, no?
Might explain the overheating anomaly too. I did have the head shaved when it was repaired for the head gasket. I just drove it around some and it was fine for me, never got hot or had any issues whatsover. Bet it's the head torque.
