It is possible but difficult and expensive.
I'm not sure why you changed to the M46, but you do your differential to match 4th gear, NOT first.
Unless the M46 has overdrive the final ratio will be the same and the difference between 1st and 2nd
will still be there no matter what differential ratio you have.
