Bricksters,
For a change I just wanted to write up a little issue with the wipers on my 1991 240. Didn't find much on it in older threads.
Issue: as soon as the engine was started (as soon as the key was in position I as a matter of fact), the wipers would start wiping and would not stop, no matter what position the switch was in. Not good.
I took off the cover of the wiper transmission, next to the wiper motor. It turned out that cleaning the contact between the copper connector and the transmission cover solved the problem. Put a smile on my face.
And here is the background story: the wipers on this 240 used to have only 2 speeds: fast and faster. To make things more interesting, they would never return to the horizontal position when turned off. Well, they would if turned off just at the right time. Trying this is a lot of fun, as you can imagine. Better still, it has been doing this ever since my wife got the car, in 1997. She thought that's how it should be.
But it seemed strange to me, so I got the adjustable relay from ipd. Picture my surprise when trying to 'replace' the presumably malfunctioning relay - there was nothing to replace. No relay. I thought that was funny, plugged in the new one, and there you have it: the wipers stayed on all the time. I figured someone, over 10 years ago, removed the relay because of that. Funny.
But a clean contact was all that was needed. Now we have all the wiper speeds, and the intermittent one can be adjusted. What luxury! Amazing.
Bye for now,
Boerre
