Need an alternator for a 1975 164 140-160 1975

Just bought a 164 today, always wanted one and the price was unbeatable. I threw in a new battery but it failed the positive battery cable lift alternator test. I didn't want to try driving home the 20+ miles before putting in a known good alternator. What are my options as far as compatibility? Can I pull the one out of my '71 144 and use it, will a 240 alternator work, or is it unique to the model?
