Absent a cade scanner, you might try this:
Take the car to a nearby parts house that will run a scan for you. My near-by AutoZone does this, and provides a little print-out. This should give you an idea of what's going on.
Then disconnect the battery for an hour or so. This will de-program a lot, if not all, of the sensors. Re-connect the battery and see if the CEL is out.
On my 1997 960, I had a problem with the CEL for evaporative emissions system. By following the above procedure I was able to get the annual emissons sticker renewed, although they had to run the car on the dynomometer.
After a few weeks of driving, the sensors get re-set, and the light might come back on. With our 960, it went out after I had some non-related work done on the engine.
With the tranny, the above may be useless. The CEL is for emission control possible problems which, seems to me, isn't emissions related.
Good Luck,
Bob
