A/C problem 700

With engine running, turn on the fan:
Can hear A/C compressor's clutch trying to kick in every 3-5 seconds.
Can the AC be switched off? Disconnected?
Pressing the AC button changes it from red to white colour of light - which one is ON? Doesnt seem to do anything in either position.
Any advice?
I dont actually need cooling, just heater.
