But, have you tested it?

Howdy,

Put your DVOM ($20 at any auto parts house) across the battery. Note the voltage. It should be somewhere around 12.6V with no load. In extreme cold it will be a little lower; but it should not be below 12V regardless of the cold.

Turn on the headlights. Now what does it measure? It should stand up to that load for several minutes without going below 11.8V. If it falls rapidly, the battery is indeed kaput.

What are the symptoms? Slow turn over during start? It could be the big cable or resistive connections. I should mention too, starters do short to ground on occasion.
