Does your diagnostics system let you run the sensors through a test cycle? Some do. If you run the diagnostics and it fails the knock sensor, then that would most certainly indicate a problem with it.
As is, if you can get hold of one that is known to be good (or new) to swap in and see it improves things, that would be the best bet.
I think, but am not sure, that if the computer senses a failed knock sensor, it will go to full retard (also known as politician mode) to protect the engine. Don't know if it would cause it to run as badly as you describe, though.
