Lambda-Sond Test Lead Strangeness 200

In my continual effort to get my '84 245 running properly, have been trying to set the base idle/mixture as per the Bentley book. On my first attempt, I attached a dwell meter with the green lead to the pink test lead and black to ground and I got nothing. I decided to replace the O2 sensor(badly needed and gave night and day difference in driveability!), but after a long drive to get the car fully warm, I still have nothing at the pink lead. I turned the CO adjustment screw up to 5 turns in each direction with no change. I have even tried two dwell meters and I have the same results each time. Am I missing something? Has anyone had a similar experience? Any thoughts? If it helps, I have the 510 ecu and the AMM is an older rebuilt unit. Other symptoms the car has are an elevated idle (between 1000 and 1100) and higher than normal running temp, if that helps at all.
Thanks,
Nick
