Catalytic converter breaking down...replace it or remove it? 200 1986

About 5 yrs and 130K yrs ago I replace my entire exhaust system including the cat back with a Starla system. I am very happy with it and it was a perfect fit. For the past week, I noticed a rattle on takeoff. I pulled up on the ramps and had my wife put in gear then neutral and step on the gas a little. I isolated the rattle coming from within the cat. Does this mean the guts of the cat are breaking down? My mileage is still at 27 mpg average. Will it be ok to leave it as is for now.....replace it....or just cut it out and run without it?
Thanks for your thoughts on this problem.
