Oxygen sensor failure - Increase in 4 MPG 200 1992

'92 240

The check engine light came on and the code reads as oxygen sensor. I have been putting the repair off especially since my MPG has increased from 20 MPG to about 24-25 MPG.

Is this potentially harmful to the car?

What replacement does anyone recommend for the 92 240? Is there a cheaper sensor that works just fine? I don't mind splicing. However, where does the 3rd wire go on the 3-wire universal when my original Bosch only has 2 wires?
