Laser levels for Front end alignment?

I have been looking on the web for ideas for DIY alignments. Specifically toe in/out, as this is most effected when replacing tie rods ends.
Saw one idea for using laser levels attached to the front wheel rims, mounted on a 2x4 or metal.
Seems like using 2 of them, and aiming them straight forward to hit a wall or some other target (2x4 on jack stands) would work.
First you would have the target at 1 foot in front of tires, then move to say, 6 feet and note whether the beams were farther or closer together.
You'd have to do some math to get the exact toe-in number, but you could get 0 pretty easy.
Also maybe you'd start by mounting on the rear wheels to get a baseline on the target area.
Anyone tried anything like this?
