Ya, the Punk240 thing was weird...I didn't realize a faulty cookie could have me logged in (with full access) to anyone's account. Have you had the electronic distributor out of the engine for a quick test yet? I've got one sitting in the shop right now getting rebuilt and there are a couple of things you can check. First, make sure your centrifugal advance is working (they can get stuck - mine was). I've soaked mine down with WD-40 prior to rebuilding it. To test it all you need to do is grab the rotor and see if it will turn without having the cam turn. There should be about 20 degrees of play in the rotor. The other option is to test it running with a dial back to zero timing light, rev the engine up and see how much total advance you have. Hard to do with a conventional timing light, easy with a dial one.
