Crank posistion sensor removal -problem

My friend has a '90 244 that will not start. With no spark at the plugs we decided to swap the crank position sensor from my 745 onto his car. I easily removed the cable from my car. I took out the bolt holding the sensor on the bell housing of his car. Tried to pull the sensor out of the hole and it would barely move.
It will rise up out of the hole about 1/8" and then stops. I can and did rotate the sensor 360 degrees while trying to get it to come out. Pulling as hard as i can with my hand (no way to get plyers or vicegrips down there) , after that little distance it stops dead and doesn't move upwards at all.
His 240 is a manual transmission, my 740 is an automatic.

Has anyone come across this problem before and found a solution ?

After massive frustration set in - we even tried to pry the sensor up with the tip of a screwdriver. Still did not budge it a millimeter, but succeded in breaking off the flange that the bolt goes thru.

Any help and suggestions greatly appreaciated.

Ron
