Odometer fix 700

My odo only works intermittently (about 2/3 of true distance recorded). The speedo is working fine. This seems to be a common 700 problem ? Is there an easy fix? I heard about a new cog wheel set, but how hard is it to access the speedo for this repair ?
I wouldn't bother but I have to record mileage for expenses!
