Nevermind, GOT IT! 120-130 1968

Glad you got it sorted out. One of the biggest limitations of the ipd tech tips is that most of them had to fit within 1/4 page... otherwise, Shayne and I would have written longer and more comprehensive tips for the catalog (and more of them). The first Vintage Catalog was supposed to be no more than 50 pages; our first draft was more than 90. 64 pages (or whatever it was) was a compromise. Fortunately, that catalog exceeded projected sales - by a large margin - and the catalog was continued. Had it not, the product line for the vintage cars would have been abandoned completely.

Sorry that you found this confusing, but after that tip was printed, we received dozens of comments from customers stating that they had made the change and were happy with it. I do think that whenever you start with a car that's been compromised with "custom" wiring, as yours has, that all bets are off. There's no reason to expect that any of the wires will be the right color, or that they'll be present at all.

For example: you mention that the original black wire to the dipper switch is unused. (I think that's what you mean when you say "The original BLACK dipper switch is unused.") The dipper switch isn't black, and there shouldn't be a black wire connected to it... so I'm guessing yours had a black wire that you didn't end up using. ? Regardless, there shouldn't be a black wire connected to the original floor mounted switch; and if your 122 has such a wire, it's the result of someone else having screwed around with it.

Per the ipd tip, the red wire does indeed connect to the new relay.

Inre: confusion about which grey wire connects to the relay - I think it would have been more clear if the tip explained that the grey wire that connects to the new relay is the same one that's located near the steering column. This is mentioned in the "mid 67 and earlier" paragraph but not in the "mid 67 and later" paragraph (which is likely the paragraph you read, because that's what it says to do).

At one point, we talked about making more thorough tech tips available online in order to avoid this kind of confusion, but the resources simply weren't there. Bummer, that. But it made sense from a business standpoint - those kinds of things don't generate sales; and selling goods is the only thing a retail business can rely on in order to stay solvent.

Best regards,

Cameron
