Plug in "tire size calculator" at Google.com and click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button. Voila, the Miata.net Tire Size Calculator. Plug in the original size and play around with new tire sizes to see what effect it has on speedometer error.

Rule of thumb for snow tires is that narrower is better, but for used tires I suppose price and condition rules.
