Make sure it is the bearing before digging into things-- I use a long handled screwdriver pressed against the part you suspect and put the handle end to your ear-- that way you can isolate the offending part. Don't rule out the accessory bushings, which can cause a misalignment that will make the belts howl like crazy.
The pick-and-pull suggestion is a good one-- you can also replace the brush/voltage regulator assembly before install it and drive with peace of mind for years (at least in terms of the alternator!)...
