My 67 220 had a Crane/Allison ignition and a severed armored cable. I have been slowly upgrading it for a D-jet conversion, and I swapped a bosch blue coil in back when I swapped a B20E into the wagon last Thanksgiving. The wagon is awaiting me having some spare time and cash, and since I got my 68 130, I've done very little to the 220 and probably will not until spring.
As I understand it, the crane unit will not work on a D-jet car, so I've decided to remove that unit from the wagon and install it in the sedan. To save time, I'm just going to swap in my pre-setup B18 (Bosch 003) distributor.
Here's my problem. I can't find the 67's original cabled coil, and I really do not want to cut into the cable on the 68. Plus after looking at that mess of wires on the ignition switch, I'm not sure I want to deal with swapping that switch out anyway. Added to that is that the switch in the 68 seems to be the style where you have to drill out a pin to remove the key tumbler. So getting the switch out will not be easy...
So,. I thought there was an easy solution... IPD has a coil bypass diode kit for $10.00 that removes the need to cut the armored cable. However, after searching their site, I found the kit listed under the pertronix ignition and there is no explanation of whether the kit works with the crane system. ...hardly surprising, it's hard to find info on the IPD site since they re-organized it.
Anyway... has anyone used one of these bypass kits with a crane/allison electronic unit?
Does anyone have any ignition recommendations for the coil (aside from buying a new Bosch blue coil and cutting the old coil off?
I'd like to save at least one original ignition setup from these two cars.
Thanks as always
