Brett,

I think you got your answer about hydrogen embrittlement.

If it were me (and, it isn't, it's you) I would just clean the accumulated grime and undercoating off and paint them with POR15 or an equivalent.

BTW, did you go to see any of the cars in the Targa Newfoundland?
