I'm interested in buying a used Volvo for my wife to use as a daily commuter. I have many years of mechanical experience restoring VW's (aircooled) so am not a novice at most repairs. I have yet to find a website which directly compares model, but from what I have seen here, am probably leaning toward a 240 wagon. I have a $2000 to $3000 budget for this purcahse.
My biggest concern is first, that I am a terminal cancer patient and I don't want to leave her with a $2000 car that needs $4000 worth of work at some point.
Some of the issues I see with Volvos seem to be timing belts, cylinder heads and heater/ac blower motors which, evidently are a PITA to repair. Quirky electrical problems seem to be similar to VW. Right now, I don't need any long term projects.
I would love to see her in a Volvo for the safety aspects and a reputation for longevity, and am looking for opinions.
Thanks,
Michael Lewis
