Cruise control (where to begin?)

So my cruise control was working intermittently, then fine. Now, it's not at all. No matter how much I toggle the hand controls, it just wont engage. Where should I look first? Is there a common place it all goes wrong? A simple wire connection, or something/somewhere more intensive/expensive?
