instrument cluster dimmer switch 200 1987

Hey all,

Just thought I would share a little something with you guys. For the past week or so the bottom fuse in my fuse panel kept blowing. It controlled the backlight for the instrument cluster and the passenger side rear parking lights. I could not, for the life of me, figure out why it kept blowing. So I started tinkering. Bulbs are all ok. No wires are grounding anywhere. So what in the world could it be? Well on an almost last-ditch hunch, I turned the dimmer switch all the way off (it had been at the maximum-brightness position), replaced the fuse, and voila! The parking lights were back, and the problem seemed to have gone the way of the dinosaur. The cluster backlight also worked fine, as long as I didn't crank the switch again. Perhaps that potentiometer in there has a bit of a glitch in it at the maximum position, allowing current in excess of the fuse rating through? If any of you fellows know for sure I would appreciate the closure your knowledge would bring me regarding this episode.

A million thanks,

Nik
