IDIOT LIGHT TEMP GAUGE

Hello...i am interested (usually after a coolant system failure) to check whether its a proper temp gauge or an idiot light....i am not keen on testing myself using resistors to ground the switch but after a few hose coolant blowouts as well as very hot days (aux fan activated) i am sure its an idiot light gauge because it never moves from the 12o'clock position.Indication is usually by green trickle on road (ur cars having a wee)....WHAT cars got the idiot gauge ...is it just the MADE IN JAPAN instument cluster ???....daryl from aussie
