Thanks to everyone who was assisting me with the A/C problem that I was having with my 85 GL Wagon. I had purchased this car with only 105,000 on the odometer. I purchased this car from the original owner (an elderly gent) and all the maintenance records were up to date and all the stamps were in the book. The car was in amazing condition with only a couple of items of concern. The overdrive would intermittently operate, and I was given the information on how to reflow the solder on the relay, and that problem was solved.
The The A/C compressor ran constantly anytime the engine was running, and could not be stopped. I found that someone had wired a jumper from the hot side of the ignition coil to the low pressure cycle switch to power the compressor. I removed the jumper, and found that the compressor would work intermittently. After many suggestions, I began to systematically trouble shoot the system last evening. I had the glove box, and center section of the dash out. I began at the compressor and found no voltage at the clutch switch. There was no voltage at the low presure cycle switch (either side). There was no voltage out of the relay, or into the relay. There was no voltage to, or out of the thermostat switch. I found the feed wire at the fuse strip (the spade connector) to be loose, and upon touching it, the connection arced, and the compressor ran. I replaced the spade connector with a new one, and the system operates as designed. This A/C system was changed over to R-134A several years ago by a competent dealership.
I can only surmise that some greasy thumb used the jumper to get the A/C operational so the car could be sold. Many thanks to all the guys here on the BrickBoard who took the time to offer guidance and assistance. This forum is great.
