Banging alone won't usually break them loose. PB Blaster soaking over time with additional hammer tapping sometimes will.

Heat will help but damaging the rubber boot is a real possibility. Pull it back and wrap it in a wet rag. Applying heat from a propane torch is sometimes enough to get some movement when using a pair of visegrips to twist carefully while heating. Then clean and grease well.
