Timing belt replaced, everythings aligned but barely runs

This will be my second timing belt, the first went way too easy. Everything was in perfect alignment, spun the motor, rechecked and buttoned it up. At first it would barely start, then it ran fairly smooth for afew seconds and quit. When it turned over again it developed a bad miss and would not start. Trying once more, it ran again afew second and died... Broke it down and rechecked the cam, crank and intermediate sprockets. Everything is in alignment except that the timing belt mark was off by one tooth on every sprocket. Also checked the distributer rotor alignment with number one wire. Everything was right on.
I did replace the flame trap and removed the hose between tbe airmass meter and the air box for easy access. Is it possible that I disturbed the connector to the air mass meter. Could this be causing the symtoms instead of the timing belt? What could I be missing?
