found source of oil loss/burning

I can't see how White ash would indicate oil burning in that cylinder. That indicates a clean lean burn.

Doing seats without taking the Head off, Take the plug out, fill the cylinder with air then remove the Spring and replace the 'Shower cap". Common method.
