When pulling a transmission, drop a rope down through the shifter hole (after removing the shifter lever) and loop it around the trans and secure it. Worst case it holds half the transmission's weight. But with a long shifter hold placement and an M41 I think it holds almost all of it (the OD unit hanging behind the rope balances out much of the trans/bellhousing in front). With the rope supporting the trans, you can twist, swing forward, backwards, sideways. I've borrowed a real transmission jack before (the kind that tilts, rotates, lifts) and found it to be less handy than the simple rope trick.
