Wet Behind the Ears... 120-130 1967

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S wagon. A bit of wetness has transmogrified into a very slow drip at the water pump. It is hard to pinpoint exactly where but it is not only from the seals into the head since they were changed out one year ago when I put on the refurbished head.

We have a 200-mile round trip coming up Wednesday night so I prefer to solve the problem Wednesday afternoon. I am calling IPD this morning when they open and I will ask them to overnight me a new pump and gasket set. My question is thus:

There are two pipes coming out of the pump - one leading away 90-degrees from the left side where it connects to the back of the motor, the other dropping down at approximately 60 degrees. How are these two connections removed? What other tips and hints do you have for making this swap as quickly and efficiently as possible? I know I have to drain the radiator to do this - must I remove it entirely? About how long should this operation take?

Thanks, as always, for your very capable advice.

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo
