I would say it is not the battery...
I would avoid those cheap regulator assemblies, and it being adjustable tells me they were not targetting to create one to match the OEM, rather they were targetting to create one to fit every car on the street.
Get a good regulator. Better yet, if you are good with a soldering iron, get a set of bosch brushes and replace the worn ones on the original bosch regulator.
I had similar problems as you, that worked great for me. I returned the mexico-made one to fcpgroton, nice guys.
