BC is totally on the right track here: you're not charging! You've got a serious problem and only a little bit of run-time before you're stuck with a dead battery and a tow bill.
Most likely with your 84, that little red wire to the alternator has crumbled, rotted, fallen off or shorted out. Common wiring harness failure, even if the rest of the engine wiring looks ok.
My fix for it is this:
cut the wire near the 8-pin grey connector on the firewall. LEave 3 inches or so sticking out of the connector. Splice on a length of small wire, 16-20AWG or so. Long enough to reach all the way across the firewall, down the right fender, under the strut tower, and down along the fender to the back of the alternator. Be gentle with the alternator screws- they can break! IF they do you'll need to remove it and take it to a rebuild shop for repair.
There's only one red wire in that connector so it should be easy to identify. If other wires have NO insulation on them, tape them so they don't touch each other or anything metal.
Hopefully this fixes it. Good luck with it!
